plate du souci/Carly Mendenhall + Lily Groot
About The Collaboration
This plate, made by Carly Mendenhall and Lily Groot, features techniques such as water etching, printed underglaze, celadon glaze, and hand painted element on stoneware. The plate’s name "du souci" comes from the motif illustration and french word, marigolds. "Souci" also means some worry, which is descriptive of the uncertain process of two different mediums colliding -- eg. "plate of some worry/of marigolds"
About The Artists
Carly Mendenhall
Carly's work revolves around transforming simple materials into vibrant playful ceramics. She takes inspiration from traditional tattooing, comics, and seeks out bright patterns in the world around her. With attention to detail and a love for bold colors, her pieces merge functionality with creativity. Whether through intricate line work or contrasting textures, her process is a celebration of both tradition and modernity, creating functional art that brings joy to everyday life.
Lily Groot
Lily Groot is an Indianapolis-based painter, muralist, and printmaker. She makes pictures of dream gardens and vessels full of cut flowers. Her paintings and prints are meditations on color, vessel form, friendship and the fleeting moment of bloom. Her work is inspired by seed catalogs, cut flowers, pottery, floral ephemera (postcards, stamps, cigarette cards) and the gardens of the Midwest.
Her work can be described as comforting, playful, naive, domestic, warm, and colorful. She is also an avid gardener, cyclist, museum-goer, and novice sewist, all of which inform her work.
