Memory Lane / Angela Vinson + Shannon Strock
About The Collaboration
This collaboration brings together Shannon Strock's nostalgic drawings with Angela Vinson’s wheel-thrown ceramics. Shannon's work explores memory and everyday life through imagery inspired by vintage photographs, while Angela creates functional pottery from red stoneware using slips, stains, and majolica techniques. For this collection, Shannon's drawings are translated into ceramic decals and incorporated into Angela’s handmade pieces.
Memory Lane features Angela’s Matrix Design, a form of asymmetric mark-making she has developed over many years. Inspired by the idea of a matrix or womb as an environment where something develops, the marks invite a sense of meditation and discovery. Shannon’s selection of vintage photographs and illustrations centers around one of life’s simplest pleasures, food! These images tie into the theme of the By the Hand: Dinner exhibition, celebrating the memories, traditions, and connections created around the table.
Together, their work brings drawing and ceramics into conversation, creating pieces that can be appreciated as artwork while also being lived with and used every day.
About The Artists
Angela Vinson
Angela (AKA LaLa) began her college studies as an art education major but was soon drawn into the painting and ceramic studio. After her sophomore year she committed to ceramics and received her BFA from Herron School of Art in Indianapolis (IUPUI). LaLa spent a year at Purdue University pursuing her MA in ceramics and switched gears to pursue teaching again. LaLa received her MA in secondary education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2007. After a few years of teaching art in the public schools, LaLa opened her studio and has been a full-time teacher, painter, and potter ever since!
Shannon Strock
Shannon Strock is an Indianapolis-based illustrator with a BFA in Integrative Studio Practice from the Herron School of Art and Design, where she focused on ceramics and illustration. Her multidisciplinary background led to work in scenic fabrication at the Indiana State Museum. Her artistic practice has always centered on figurative work, gradually evolving into an exploration of memory and nostalgia. Now working as a librarian, Shannon continues to be drawn to the preservation of stories and the personal histories that connect her artwork and professional life.
